Check Out Your Mind

Prayer: Lord I come with thanksgiving in my heart because of who you are in my life and what you have done for me. We often confess with our mouths saying we are not worthy of you and what you have done by dying on the cross for our sins, I know that it is said in a humble manner but that statement diminishes the importance of the sacrifice that you made for us. So we ask forgiveness Lord, for we know not what we do. Keep us in our right mind, in Jesus’ name. Amen

I use to love music in my younger days and I still like it, although my song selections have changed. When I was about 15 years old, my mom brought me a Studio Sound Design component set which had a phonograph or record player, an 8 track tape player, an AM and FM radio, and two speakers. I use to listen to the radio station WJIZ out of Albany, GA. Back in those days, the station would play a genre of music. I heard the lastest hits, the oldies but goodies, the blues, jazz, Gospel, and the slow jams around 9:00 PM. They played the sounds from Motown, Staxx, and Atlantic Records just to name a few. I’ve heard songs like, Check out your mind; Mind Blowing Decisions, I Got My Mind Made Up, Didn’t I Blow Your Mind, but the thing that I remember most was when I would hear these phrases or statements, whether in prayer or in what we called Church, “Lord THANK YOU for waking me up this morning clothed in my right mind or Lord keep me in Clothed in my right mind”.

As a child what I heard was not the word Clothed but closed, even then I would think, “What a funny or strange thing to say”. So as an adult, when I would pray, I found myself saying those same things, we often repeat what we hear, especially because of repetition. One day as I was reading the Word of God in the Book of Mark, it tells the story of Jesus and his disciples encountering a man possessed with an unclean spirit. I’m sure you’ve heard or read the story, Jesus told the spirits to come out and they went into a herd of swine feeding and they that fed the swine ran into the city and the country to tell what was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. Mark 5:15 Boom, the light came on, there it is, “Clothed in his right mind”.

Let explore “ Clothed and in your right mind” a little further. What does it mean to you? Just by the context of the story one who thinks that the man was once again normal, free of any bounds or unclean spirits, just a regular man because he was now with Jesus, he is back in fellowship with Jesus. It is no secret, God wants us clothed, He clothed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:25-30 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? With regards to your mind, The Apostle Paul tell us in various writing: When we are born again, we are a new creation in:

  • Roman 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • Ephesians 4:23-24 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

  • 1 Corinthian 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.
  • Roman 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace
  • Colossians 3:2 Set your affection (mind) on things above, not on things on the earth.

Jesus was always about His Father’s business. He came from the Throne of Grace above and He went back to take His Place on the Throne. He went and prepared a place for us that where He is, there we will be also. So in our right mind is to have the mind of Christ, Righteous and Holy. So we should have a mind that is spiritual and not carnal, keeping our mind on the things above and not the things below, for they are temporary but the things above are eternal. Check out your mind.

Father God, keep me in my right mind that I will continue to have fellowship with you. If I confess that I have the mind of Christ, let my ways be as He. Let not my mind focus on carnally but spiritual things in you. Draw Me Nearer To You.

In Jesus Name Amen.
